The 2013 Forum, among others, discussed results from a survey to establish the status and scope of existing university/industry linkages in East Africa. This led to the Forum resolving that a regional research and innovation capacity building programme be developed, whose goal would be to create and expand the research and innovation space in East Africa by
(i) shaping the academia, public, and private sector research and innovation agenda through enhancing the capacity of the academia to generate knowledge and innovation, and the private sector/industry to have the reciprocal absorptive capacity of the knowledge and innovation so generated, and
(ii) designating some existing R&D institutions as regional research and innovation hubs linked to business and innovation clusters supported by both the public and private sectors. Currently, IUCEA in collaboration with EABC and EADB is developing the said programme. In that regard a survey on the status and scope of research and innovation capacity building initiatives in the EAC Partner States is currently being undertaken, whose results will be presented during the 2015 Forum.
The 2015 Forum IUCEA, EABC and EADB are jointly organizing the Academia-Public-Private Partnership Forum and Exhibitions 2015, which will be held under the theme “Developing the Ideal Graduate through AcademiaPublic-Private Partnership”. The Forum will be conducted through dialogue discussions focused on the ongoing debate on how to develop an ideal graduate who is able to enhance the drive towards East Africa’s sustainable socio-economic development. Furthermore, the dialogue sessions will focus on, among others, the role of higher education institutions, employers, the private sector, and governments in providing the best 2 possible opportunities to students to enable them build, refine and articulate their knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, creativity, and attitude, for them to become ideal graduates in the world of work.
