IUCEA Annual General Meeting Scheduled for 17th -18th July 2024 in Juba, South Sudan

The 15th Annual Meeting and Conference of the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) has been scheduled for July 17th -18th in Juba, South Sudan. The event brings together higher education managers, policymakers, and practitioners from the East African Community (EAC) and beyond. This year’s statutory event focuses on higher education leadership and governance, which are crucial to achieving the desired East African Community Common Higher Education Area. Dissuasions will be under the theme “Innovative Leadership and Governance Approaches in Higher Education: Towards EAC Common Higher Education Area”. The conference targets University Presidents, Provosts, Rectors, Directors, Director Generals, Vice-Chancellors, EAC government officials, education policymakers, industry representatives, researchers and scholars, higher education experts, innovators, and student representatives.

The Declaration of EAC as a Common Higher Education Area by the 18th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State of the East African Community Partner States held on May 20, 2017, in Dar Es-Salaam, Tanzania was a significant milestone in transforming the higher education landscape in the region. “The IUCEA 15th Conference aims to contribute to the attainment of the objectives of the Declaration which are to have a comparable, compatible, coherent, and harmonized system of higher education for the region that facilitates the free mobility of students, staff, and professionals, and mutual recognition of qualifications,” said Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona, IUCEA Executive Secretary.

“The conference offers an opportunity to examine innovative leadership frameworks and strategies addressing the challenges facing higher education institutions in the context of EAC regional integration. It also seeks to highlight transformative governance practices that support institutional effectiveness, foster stakeholder engagement, and facilitate decision-making processes aligned with higher education harmonization and regional integration goals” said Prof. Micheal Mawa, the Chairperson of IUCEA Organising Committee for the conference.

Furthermore, the event aims to showcase innovative pedagogical approaches and teaching methodologies to enhance student learning outcomes and critical thinking skills, preparing graduates for success in a rapidly evolving technology. Reflecting on strategies for mobilizing and managing resources effectively is also a key focus, including sustainable funding models, public-private partnerships, and leveraging technological advancements for quality higher education.

Overall, the conference aims to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and collaboration among higher education stakeholders to facilitate mutual learning and partnerships for advancing the common higher education area in the EAC.
